Vellimalai Murugan Temple, Vellimalai, Kanyakumari District

Vellimalai is famous for the Lord Murugan Temple called "Bala Subramaniya Swamy Temple" located atop of the hill Vellimalai. It is popularly believed that Valli was born here, and raised by a tribal king to marry with Lord Murugan in Love marriage. Nonetheless, a similar story is associated with another namesake place, Vallimalai in Vellore district and Tiruttani of Tiruvallur district in the far north of Tamil Nadu.

The 200 feet high Vellimalai hill is located in the southern tip of the Indian subcontinent 7 miles west of Nagerkoil. South of this hill is the ocean and north of the hill are the western ghats. In this scenic area is located the ancient Balasubramanya Swami temple on top of the Velli Malai hill.

Lord Murugan Temple attracts a lot of pilgrims from the surrounding areas. The famous festivals of the temple are "Sasti Sura Samkaram"- killing of Suran, the demon leader by Lord Bala Subramaniya Swamy and Vaikasi Visakam. On that day Vetri Vel Muruganuku Arokara, Vel Vel is heard everywhere by the devotees. From the top of the hill, the major part of the green Kanya Kumari District can be viewed, which will be a mind-blowing experience for nature lovers.

Every year two times Kavadi will be carried to Vellimalai from Eraniel Devotees, One from Checkala Theru & the other Kavadi from Selvaraja Ganapathy Temple, Valliyatan Karai

In Velimalai the last Friday in every Tamil month is considered to be auspicious and Food (Kanji) is offered as prasadam here.
